About Andrea Asuaje
Andrea Asuaje is a recent graduate from the University of Florida, where she received a bachelor of science in print journalism and a bachelor of arts in English literature.
.
Andrea worked for several publications, including City Link, a weekly arts and entertainment magazine, the Miami Herald and the Independent Florida Alligator while in college. She has also freelanced for the Florida Engineer, despite knowing nothing about engineering. In the fall of 2009, Andrea traveled to Brazil as a part of the Florida FlyIns team, where she and eight other journalism students captured the lives of the people living in Icapui — a small, rural fishing town on the northeastern coast of the South American country. After graduation, Andrea joined the reporting ranks of the St. Augustine Record, working as a news intern, where she reports and writes breaking news, hard news and features.
.
She is currently working as the main reporter for the St. Johns Sun. She also writes for the St. Augustine Record, Drift Magazine and Eco Latino.
.
At UF, she was also a member of No Southern Accent, the University of Florida’s co-ed competitive a cappella group, for four years, three of which she held the position of the group’s musical director. Under her leadership, NSA placed second at the south quarterfinal round of the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella in both 2008 and 2010, sending the group to the south regional final round for each of those years. She continues to participate in the a cappella world by being involved with CASA — the Contemporary A Cappella Society of America — in events such as SoJam, an annual a cappella conference in North Carolina, where she taught a class on how to create a clean, professional media presence for collegiate groups.
.
Aside from writing and singing, Andrea enjoys playing violin and guitar, long-winded British literature, literary journalism, femininity, Rock Band, Academy Award-winning films, running, her BlackBerry, Associated Press style, James Joyce, award shows, listmaking, baking, ridiculously high heels and all things print.
